FIU Graduates Push Boundaries in Brain Research and Endurance Sports
A Veterinarian’s Path to Alzheimer’s Detection
For decades, researchers have known that inflammation in the brain plays a role in Alzheimer’s disease. What they could not figure out was how to detect that inflammation early enough to make a difference. The connection between a specific brain protein and the disease’s progression remained a mystery that resisted explanation despite years of study across the globe.
Daniel Martinez-Perez, a 34-year-old Ph.D. candidate at Florida International University, took an unusual route into neuroscience. A veterinarian from Medellín, Colombia, he grew curious about cognitive decline while treating cats and dogs with dementia-like symptoms in his clinical practice. That interest led him from veterinary medicine into neuroscience and eventually to FIU, where he joined the lab of Dean Tomás R. Guilarte at the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work.
The research team examined TSPO, a brain protein linked to inflammation, and its relationship to Alzheimer’s progression. Martinez-Perez served as lead author on the study, which explored how this protein might serve as a marker for brain changes long before symptoms become obvious. [2] The findings could help move science closer to earlier detection and future treatments for a disease that affects millions worldwide.
What makes this work notable is its bridge-building nature. Martinez-Perez continues to pursue research that connects veterinary medicine, neuroscience and public health - three fields that rarely speak to each other but may hold complementary pieces of the same puzzle. The work represents a convergence of clinical observation from animal patients with cutting-edge molecular research in human brain disease.

An Ironman’s Scientific Approach to Nutrition
Few people test the limits of human endurance as directly as Giovanni Junqueira Garotti, a 22-year-old who completed six Ironman triathlons on six continents in 65 combined hours.
Each race required him to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles - a total of 140.6 miles per event, pushing through extreme humidity, cold weather, injury and time-zone changes across the globe. The achievement is now under review by Guinness World Records as the fastest aggregate time to complete the challenge. [3]
Garotti credits his FIU education with helping him achieve this milestone, applying what he learned in his academic program in dietetics and nutrition to serve as his own nutritionist throughout training. From carb loading to electrolyte strategies, he used scientific literature and guidance from FIU faculty to refine his performance at every stage of preparation.
Garotti is the highest-GPA graduating undergraduate in FIU’s Department of Dietetics and Nutrition and is receiving the Dean’s Excellence Award for his academic performance. [1] After graduation, he will begin FIU’s master’s program in dietetics and nutrition to eventually become a sports dietitian - turning his personal experience into professional expertise that can help other athletes reach their own limits.
Scaling Education Across Borders

The question of how to scale professional education across geographic and economic barriers has challenged universities for as long as they have existed. Training programs that work in one location often fail when transplanted to another, and maintaining quality standards across multiple countries presents logistical hurdles that seem almost insurmountable. The answer may lie in partnerships that treat education as a shared enterprise rather than a one-way transfer of knowledge. .
