Casia Steinhaus, a double major in Physics and Mathematics at the University of North Dakota, has become the first UND student to receive the prestigious Astronaut Scholarship. Her journey from a rural North Dakota farm to national recognition in both competitive shooting and STEM research marks a distinctive achievement in the university’s history.

A Scholarship Born From Space Pioneers

Foundation did not emerge from a university committee or a government agency. It was established in 1984 by the six surviving members of the Mercury 7 astronaut team — the original American pioneers of human spaceflight. The program has run continuously since then, selecting students who show exceptional promise in STEM fields.

Steinhaus joins the 2026 class of Astronaut Scholars, a cohort of 79 students drawn from 54 colleges and universities across the United States. [2] The award recognizes outstanding academic achievement, research accomplishments, leadership, and the potential to advance innovation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

A Record of Distinction Beyond the Classroom

Steinhaus has not limited her ambition to a single honor. Over the past year, she has accumulated a portfolio of nationally competitive awards that most undergraduates only dream of approaching. She earned the Goldwater Scholarship, one of the most prestigious undergraduate awards in the country for students pursuing research careers in STEM. She also secured a U.S. Department of Energy Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, placing her inside one of the nation’s leading fusion energy research facilities. Her international reach extends through a DAAD RISE Professional award, a German Academic Exchange Service program that connects North American students with research opportunities in Germany. [5] She was additionally recognized as a semifinalist for the Brooke Owens Fellowship, a program designed to honor the legacy of a pioneering female space industry leader. [6] Each of these recognitions required its own application process, its own demonstration of merit, its own evidence of research capability.

Chu emphasized the extraordinary level of commitment and excellence that Steinhaus brings to every pursuit she undertakes.

The Steady Hand Behind the Science

Steinhaus took first place overall at the Individual Smallbore Rifle Intercollegiate Club National Championships in both 2024 and 2025. Earlier this year, she won the 2026 Air Rifle national championship.

Her athletic achievements demonstrate a capacity for sustained focus that complements her academic work in physics and mathematics.

Her path from a Devils Lake farm to Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory to national shooting championships illustrates a rare combination of intellectual range and disciplined practice.

Measurement and the Road Ahead

The scholarship provides more than financial support. Astronaut Scholars gain access to astronauts, industry leaders, researchers, and innovators who can support their academic and professional growth.

Yet the full measure of Steinhaus’s potential remains constrained by the limits of current evaluation methods. Scholarship committees can assess grades, research output, and leadership roles. They cannot fully capture the quality of mind that enables someone to excel simultaneously at plasma physics and national-level marksmanship. The measurement tools available to selection panels — transcripts, recommendation letters, application essays — capture only a partial picture of what a student like Steinhaus will ultimately contribute.

The same limitation applies to the broader scientific enterprise she is entering. Plasma physics, the field she explored at Princeton, still struggles with measurement challenges that define its frontier. Researchers cannot directly observe the interior of a fusion reactor under operating conditions. They must infer what happens inside from external diagnostics and computational models. The gap between what can be measured and what must be understood remains a central constraint on progress.
