When a Cooler Becomes a Lifeline

A message in a bottle and a satellite distress signal share the same operating principle: both trust a stranger to find them. The difference is the stranger. One is a beachcomber who may never walk that shore. The other is a constellation of machines in orbit, listening without pause. .

On Memorial Day weekend in 2024, a five-person team was fishing roughly 40 miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast when their boat sank in about 30 seconds. They found themselves in open water, pulling on life jackets and grabbing coolers as they surfaced. One crew member, Easton Barrett, held the only mobile phone aboard — and it had no cell service. He recorded a short farewell, intending to seal the phone inside a cooler in the hope that someone would eventually find it.

The plan that actually worked was smaller and quieter. Another team member activated a personal locator beacon, a handheld device that had been stowed aboard at the last minute. The beacon transmitted a distress signal to satellites, which relayed the transmitter’s location to the nearest available ground station. A mission control center then alerted rescue coordination centers, which mobilized crews. For Barrett and his team, the responding vessel was a Florida Coast Guard boat.

The Beacon That Speaks to Orbit

A personal locator beacon, or PLB, is a rugged, buoyant, handheld transmitter with a battery life of five to 10 years. . The unit that saved Barrett’s crew was a registered ResQLink PLB built by ACR Electronics Inc. of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Beyond alerting rescue authorities, that class of device also notifies the owner’s emergency contact that a distress call has been activated. Every emergency beacon sold must meet the same requirements, so that the equipment performs when the moment arrives.

The satellites that receive those signals belong to the Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking system, known as SARSAT. . In this system, an emergency signal carrying the transmitter’s location is directed to the nearest available ground station. U.S. operations began in 1982, and the effort became an international collaboration in 1985. The flight and ground technologies used worldwide were originally developed at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland

Today the program counts 62 operational satellites, with 45 nations contributing services that range from operating ground stations to supplying rescue crews. Across its history, SARSAT has been credited with saving more than 63,000 lives.

Barrett later said he has tried ever since to teach others about safety on the water and in the outdoors by using a PLB, adding that if it saves one life, the effort is worth it. .
