Open Peer Review Linked to Fewer Retractions
The Counterintuitive Math of Open Files
At first glance, the finding sounds backwards. A paper whose review reports sit in public view would be expected to attract more scrutiny, more challenges, more retractions. The opposite appears to be true.
Papers with publicly available peer-review reports are less likely to be retracted than papers without public reports. [1] That is the central result of a study posted as a preprint by Andrew Barnett and Michael Spick on MetaArXiv in 2026. [1]
The paradox dissolves when the analysis turns to who chooses transparency. The authors say the pattern could, in some cases, reflect greater confidence among researchers who opt to make the review process transparent. [1] In other words, the act of opening the file may be a signal of the author’s own certainty — not a magnet for correction.
A retraction is not a verdict on quality at submission. A retraction is a downstream event, often triggered by problems that surface after publication. The study’s comparison therefore sits between two groups defined by a choice made before that downstream period even begins.

Which Other Fields Could Borrow This Lens
The open question is which other fields can benefit from the same finding.
Medicine, psychology, and the social sciences all run on peer review, and all have their own retraction records. Any field where authors can voluntarily disclose review reports is a candidate for the same pattern.
The study reports an association rather than causation. A correlation observed in one domain does not automatically transfer to another.
Comparing retraction rates between papers with and without public reports is a template any discipline can run, provided it has the retraction data and the disclosure option in place.
What the Comparison Changes and What It Leaves Open
The finding changes one thing clearly: it weakens the assumption that transparency invites more retractions. If anything, the data point the other way.

It leaves open the mechanism. Greater confidence among authors who choose transparency is offered as one possible explanation, not a proven cause. Other factors — journal policy, field norms, or the types of papers that tend to be published with open reports — may drive part of the pattern.
It also leaves open the question of scope. The result comes from a specific analysis, and the boundary between what the data show and what they merely suggest remains.
Papers with public peer-review reports retract less often. Whether that signal grows, holds, or fades as more journals adopt transparent review is a question the next round of data will answer.
