That is the number that rewrites the story of Europe. For decades, archaeologists believed the continent’s prehistory was a simple tale of three great waves: first hunter-gatherers, then farmers from Anatolia, then steppe herders. But new DNA evidence from the University of Huddersfield, Harvard University, and Bournemouth University reveals something far more complex[1][2]. The old story was too clean. The real past is messy, intimate, and surprising.

The old understanding: Three migrations, one Europe

Until recently, geneticists thought Europe’s population history was straightforward. Around 15,000 years ago, the Western Hunter-Gatherers arrived. Then, after 9,000 years ago, farmers from Anatolia spread across the continent. Finally, 5,000 years ago, the Corded Ware people—named for the cord-like patterns on their pottery—swept in from the Pontic-Caspian steppe. Each wave replaced the previous one, leaving a clear genetic trail. Most modern Europeans carry DNA from all three groups.

But this model was always too simple. It assumed each group moved as a block, with little mixing. It ignored the wetlands, the rivers, and the women.

The new evidence: Women carried farming into hunter-gatherer communities

The research team analyzed genomes from human remains along the River Meuse in Belgium, dating to around 5,000 years ago. They also studied samples from the Lower Rhine-Meuse area, including the Swifterbant culture in the Netherlands. These were wetland regions where hunter-gatherers lived alongside early farmers.

The surprise came from the DNA itself. The skeletons from later Neolithic Belgium carried around 30–50% local hunter-gatherer ancestry—far more than the 10% seen in earlier farmers. The hunter-gatherers had not vanished. They had absorbed farming knowledge, and women were the bridge.

How do we know? The team compared Y-chromosomes, which track male ancestry, with mitochondrial DNA, which tracks female ancestry. Every Y-chromosome in the Belgian remains came from hunter-gatherers. But three-quarters of the mitochondrial lineages came from Neolithic farmers living further south. The pattern was unmistakable: farming women married into hunter-gatherer communities.

This matches a model proposed by archaeologists Marek Zvelebil and Peter Rowley-Conwy in the 1980s. They described a “frontier mobility” process where contact, trade, and intermarriage gradually spread farming. But the new DNA shows something unexpected: it was the women from the farming communities who moved north, not the other way around. Contrary to the old assumption that hunter-gatherer women would “marry up” into farming societies, the evidence shows “more advanced” farming women marrying into forager groups. Perceptions need to change.

The deeper truth: Europe was reshaped by marriage, not just migration

This finding changes how we think about cultural change. Farming did not spread like a wave, washing away everything in its path. It spread through relationships—through women who brought seeds, skills, and knowledge into their new families. The hunter-gatherers did not disappear; they adopted farming gradually, over generations, through these alliances.

The same pattern appears at other water-rich sites across the region. In the Dutch Swifterbant culture, which maintained a hunter-gatherer economy alongside some farming, individuals carried close to 100% hunter-gatherer ancestry. They were not replaced. They were transformed.

Then came the Bell Beaker people: A second, more violent transformation

Around 4,600 years ago, everything changed again. A new wave of settlers—pastoralist-farmers from the Pontic-Caspian steppe—arrived in the Rhine area as the Corded Ware culture. Within centuries, they transformed into the Bell Beaker culture, named for their distinctive pottery. Their genetic signature was new to Europe.

The DNA shows that 4,400 years ago, less than 20% of the ancestry in the Rhine-Meuse region came from the earlier farmers and hunter-gatherers. At least 80% was now from the steppe. The Bell Beaker people expanded rapidly, spreading across central Europe, across the English Channel, and throughout Britain, reaching as far north as Orkney.

The British farmers who had built Stonehenge over the preceding centuries all but disappeared. The DNA suggests a 90% replacement of Britain’s Neolithic farmers[1][2]. Why? The reasons remain unclear. Perhaps disease, conflict, or environmental change played a role. But the pattern is stark: the Bell Beaker migration was not a gentle exchange. It was a population replacement.

Parallels and bridges: What other research shows

This story echoes findings from other parts of Europe. In Scandinavia, ancient DNA studies from the University of Copenhagen show a similar pattern: hunter-gatherer ancestry persisted in coastal areas long after farming arrived[3]. In the Balkans, research from the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History reveals complex mixing between early farmers and local foragers[4]. The pattern is consistent: the old three-wave model is a caricature.

The new study, published by Iñigo Olalde, Eveline Altena, and colleagues from Harvard, the University of Huddersfield, and institutions across Europe, adds fine-grained detail[1][2]. It shows that the frontier between farmers and hunter-gatherers was permeable—especially for women. It also shows that the Bell Beaker expansion was not a simple migration but a transformation that reshaped genetics, culture, and language.

What this raises: The open question

The research does not close the story. It opens new questions. Did the British farmers really vanish, or did they mix in ways we have not yet detected? What role did climate change play in these population shifts? And why did women move north, not south?

Perhaps the most profound question is this: How many other assumptions about the past are wrong? The old model was neat and satisfying. The new evidence is messy and human. It suggests that history is not a series of clean replacements but a web of alliances, marriages, and choices made by individuals.

The women who married into hunter-gatherer communities did not know they were changing the course of European prehistory. They were just living their lives. But their DNA tells a story that challenges everything we thought we knew.
