The gap between a scientific discovery and its arrival in a doctor’s office is not measured in months. It is measured in decades. In 2011, researchers Morris, Wooding, and Grant published a study in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine that quantified this lag. They found that, in the medical field, it takes an average of 17 years for research findings to reach clinicians. This number is not an estimate. This 17-year lag means that a medical student graduating today may be practicing for nearly two decades before the knowledge they learned in their first year is fully updated by what researchers discovered in their final year. Neuroscientists abandoned this model in the 1990s. They found no evidence for separate brain layers with distinct evolutionary origins. The brain does not work that way. Yet the triune brain model did not disappear. It remained in college textbooks. Specifically, many Psychology 101 textbooks continued to present the triune brain as a real model until at least 2017. That is a research lag of more than a quarter-century. A student who learned the triune brain model in 1990 and became a therapist by 1995 would have been teaching patients about their lizard brain for over 20 years after the scientific community had declared the model incorrect.
The lag has consequences. Many popular trauma-healing modalities are built on the foundation of the triune brain. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) uses the model. Many somatic trauma therapies rely on it. The polyvagal theory, which is widely taught in trauma workshops, is built on the same disconfirmed foundation. This is not a coincidence. The creators of these modalities studied the triune brain model in college. They were graded on their knowledge of it. They built their careers on it. The model persists because it was taught as fact long after it was proven wrong.

Even clinicians with good intentions and the best information they can find may be relying on ideas that are decades out of date.
