Children Now Veto Boring Family Vacation Destinations

Children Now Veto Boring Family Vacation Destinations

Think of vacation planning like a family dinner menu. For decades, parents chose the main course and children ate what was served. Now the kids are writing the menu themselves. A recent Mastercard Travel Trendline report shows that 76% of parents of Gen Alpha children — those born between 2010 and 2024 — say their children have significant input on vacation destinations. Even more striking: 85% of those parents admit their children can veto destinations the kids find boring. This is not a minor shift. This is a structural change in how families travel.

Before this report, the common assumption was that parents made destination decisions with children as passive participants. Hotels marketed to adults and hoped kids would follow. The Mastercard data turns that assumption upside down. Children now hold actual decision power. They do not merely suggest. They can block choices. The parent is no longer the sole gatekeeper of family vacation plans. The child has become a co-decider with veto authority.

The next measurement needed is whether this power extends beyond destination choice into daily itinerary decisions during the trip itself. Do children who veto boring destinations also veto boring activities once they arrive? The Mastercard data stops at the booking stage. The next study should track whether veto power carries through the entire vacation experience.

Hotels create age-specific programs for children from infancy to adolescence

The hotel industry has responded directly to this power shift. Hotels are not waiting for parents to ask. They are building programs that target children as primary guests. At Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya in Mexico, the new Mythos World experience launching summer 2026 divides children into four age groups: Mythos Sprouts for ages 1 to 3, Mythos Seekers for ages 4 to 8, Mythos Pathfinders for tweens, and Mythos Scouts for ages 13 to 16. Each group gets activities drawn from Tulum and Mayan culture — crafts, storytelling, nature exploration, and creative workshops. The resort also offers a Jungle Tour for the whole family and a Stargazer program for nighttime constellation viewing.

At Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit in Mexico, the resort already had a Baby Concierge program offering nursery essentials, chef-crafted gourmet purees, and baby wellness treatments. Now it adds a new baby sleep program. Every family checking in with an infant receives an expert-created travel sleep guide with tips on managing time zone adjustments and creating sleep patterns away from home. The Kids Club also offers wind-down activities to help young guests transition from active days to bedtime.

Brush Creek Ranch in Saratoga, Wyoming, launched a Teen Trailblazers program for ages 10 to 14, running June through October. Activities include archery, mountain biking, and trail trekking across the ranch’s 30,000 acres. Younger children ages four to nine can join the year-round Li’l Wranglers program. The whole family can also participate in the new Bleat & Greet experience with baby goats, which includes cuddle and play time plus information about daily goat care.

Loews Hotels & Co launched its Loews Little Legends: STEAM Explorers program for summer 2026. The program provides complimentary STEAM Explorer Kits containing a compass, magnifying glass, kaleidoscope, and binoculars. A companion activity book features prompts and challenges designed to get kids observing their surroundings. Loews properties also offer on-site Discovery Days. At Loews Arlington Hotel, the resort partners with the Arlington Museum of Art to host complimentary kids’ art classes every other Saturday from Memorial Day through Labor Day. At Loews Miami Beach Hotel, young guests can visit the SoBe Kids Club for activities created by the Frost Science Museum specifically for that property. Explorer Kits and Discovery Days will be available at participating Loews Hotels & Co properties from June 1 through Labor Day 2026, excluding Loews Hollywood Hotel, Loews New Orleans Hotel, and Loews Orlando properties.

Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita in Nayarit, Mexico, already had its KidsWell program for ages five to 12 focusing on mindfulness, creativity, and cultural immersion, plus. The Container teen hangout space with cinema, virtual reality, video games, and lounge areas. Now the resort introduces Babies for All Seasons for children from newborns to 18 months. This industry-first program includes chef-crafted baby dining menus made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients and complimentary premium baby gear like bathtubs, play mats, and feeding essentials. Baby yoga and reflexology sessions encourage relaxation and parent-child bonding.

The next measurement needed is whether these programs actually increase repeat bookings. Hotels are investing heavily in children’s programming. The data that would confirm success is whether families return specifically because of these programs.

Resorts use local environments and mascots to engage young guests

Montage Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina, uses its Lowcountry surroundings as a living classroom. The revitalized children’s program Paintbox, for ages five to 12, helps young guests explore the outdoors through the resort’s Naturalist Program. Activities include nature walks, an introduction to fishing, regionally inspired crafts, and wilderness explorations. The refreshed building that houses the program features a hand-painted mural depicting scenes from the local ecosystem. Kids can earn destination-specific badges through the Montage Merits program by completing activities such as wildlife spotting and roasting s’mores.

Omni Hotels & Resorts is launching Omni Kids for summer 2026 across its 50-plus properties. The program begins with a dedicated kid-friendly arrival experience and continues with exclusive amenities, customized dining, destination-inspired activities, and interactive programming. A new golden retriever mascot named Ollie appears on welcome gifts, activity kits, dining menus, and keepsakes. Omni is also bringing back its Kids Eat Free program, where children 10 and under receive complimentary breakfast and lunch from the Omni Kids menu.

Hacienda AltaGracia, Auberge Collection in Costa Rica, launched the AltaGracia Discovery Series for teens ages 14 to 17. Activities take full advantage of the mountain setting in southern Costa Rica. The program includes a hands-on introduction to knots, ropes, and tree climbing, plus a guided nighttime forest trek. The resort also offers a separate space for teens to gather and socialize.

The next measurement needed is whether these programs genuinely reduce screen time for children on vacation. The hotels claim their programs encourage outdoor exploration and device-free engagement. No study has yet measured actual screen time reduction in children participating in these hotel programs compared to children on traditional family vacations. That data would confirm whether the hotel industry’s investment in children’s programming achieves its stated goal of getting kids off their phones and into the world.
