That reflex is exactly what allows a consignment to vanish for months while every party involved reports that the system worked. The question of whose box it is and where it is going is the correct one, and at this hour nobody can answer it.
Australia’s Department of Defence is examining how F-35 fighter jet parts bound for the United States from Australia were unexpectedly diverted to Hong Kong, the acting prime minister, Richard Marles, said on Tuesday. He said “very much everything that has occurred at the Australian end” would be reviewed. [1] The review covers only the Australian leg of a journey that was meant to end in the United States.
Marles also said the parts were not “sensitive” — “we are not talking about sensitive equipment here, or sensitive parts” — and described a “sense of comfort” about how Australia has engaged with the program through the main company contracted by the government, Lockheed Martin. [1] In his account, the matter is ultimately for the United States and Lockheed to manage. What is not in dispute is the arithmetic: the components travelled with an unnamed outside company acting for the manufacturer, and months after the unplanned diversion they remain unaccounted for.
Its last known location is Hong Kong, a Chinese territory with a special governing status.
The US Department of Defense and the office that manages the multinational F-35 program confirmed they are aware of the “shipment issue. A spokesperson said they are working with US authorities and industry partners to retrieve the components, investigate the incident and put safeguards in place to avoid a repeat. Retrieve, investigate, safeguard: that is the entirety of the public plan.
Following the Crate to Its Last Known Point
The journey starts in Australia, one of the early development partners in the F-35. The program spans development, supply, management and long-term maintenance of the fighter jets across different countries. Australia also hosts a regional distribution hub for F-35 parts in New South Wales. Many hands, no single pair able to see the whole route: the fragmentation is the problem.
The scale of that network is countable. More than 70 Australian companies hold production, maintenance and support contracts with the F-35 program. The Victorian state government says in excess of 700 of the fighter jet’s “critical pieces” are manufactured in Victoria alone. Australian companies involved in the program’s supply chain have been awarded contracts valued in the billions of dollars. In a system that size, responsibility for a single crate has many candidate owners, while the record of where that crate went has very few.
The trail ends where the flight plan did not: Hong Kong. Michael Shoebridge, a director for Strategic Analysis Australia who has worked in intelligence agencies, set out why that endpoint holds value for an adversary. There are two reasons China, or another adversary, would want F-35 parts, he said — to take them apart to learn how they are built, or to learn how to better exploit and attack them. Neither purpose requires the parts to be shipped back out again.
Shoebridge’s assessment of how they got there is blunt. He called the shipment’s pitstop in Hong Kong “such an unexpectedly stupid thing” for the manufacturer or Australia to do, and described the affair as “an act of incredible ineptitude and stupidity”. [1] In his reading, China is taking advantage of a stroke of luck handed to it by the people involved.
The Price of Never Finding It
The missing crate now sits beside a far larger transaction: 48 aircraft cleared for export, and one diverted consignment nobody can locate.
If the components are never retrieved and no safeguards are put in place, the two possibilities Shoebridge named stop being theoretical and become a property of the fleet. A design an adversary can copy, or a weakness it has learned to aim at, changes what the aircraft is worth to the person inside it: the pilot is effectively told that protection rests on stealth that can be replicated or countered. That bill is paid by people who never see a cargo document listing what is on board: aircrew, and the partner nations that staked part of their industrial base on the promise that the technology stays in allied hands. The promised retrieval, investigation and safeguards are the only items standing between a freight accident and that outcome.
