IonQ achieves record 99.99 percent quantum gate fidelity
The Accidental Path to Four-Nines Precision
What began as an unexpected detour in quantum research has now reshaped the entire field. IonQ has announced that it achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, a global benchmark in computational accuracy and scalability. The jump to four-nines fidelity represents a tenfold reduction in error rates: the old standard would produce roughly one error in a thousand operations, while the new standard produces one error in ten thousand operations. The company explained that higher gate fidelity reduces error rates, allowing faster, more reliable computations. By crossing the four-nines threshold, IonQ said it can now scale its hardware to millions of qubits by 2030.

Earlier Records Now Seen in a Different Light
The previous record stood at 99.97% two-qubit gate fidelity, set in 2024 by Oxford Ionics, a British quantum computing startup that IonQ acquired earlier this year. [1] Dr. Chris Ballance, co-founder of Oxford Ionics and now part of IonQ, said that the demonstration proves that world-record quantum computing performance is now possible on mass-manufacturable technology. The new record was achieved using prototype systems underpinning IonQ’s 256-qubit devices, expected to debut in 2026. The company said this approach simplifies scaling, enhances system stability, and cuts manufacturing costs. Niccolo de Masi, chairman and CEO of IonQ, said that reaching four-nines fidelity is a watershed moment for quantum leadership, bringing fault-tolerant quantum systems years closer to mass market adoption.
